Senator Natasha Challenges Court’s Contempt Verdict Over Facebook Post

Posted on July 12, 2025

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken her case to the Court of Appeal, asking it to cancel a recent court ruling that found her guilty of contempt.

The ruling was given on July 4, 2025, by Justice Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The case began as a legal dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and a group of parties over the outcome of the 2023 Kogi Central Senatorial election. During the proceedings, the senator made a post on Facebook, which the judge later described as disrespectful to the court. Justice Nyako found the post offensive and ruled it as contempt of court, leading to the senator’s conviction and a fine.

In her appeal, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said the judge made a mistake by handling the contempt case herself and not following the proper legal process. She explained that the statement considered as contempt was posted on her Facebook page, which she believes is outside the court’s immediate control. Because of that, she argued, a different judge should have handled the case using the normal criminal court process.

The senator also said the judge did not give her a fair hearing and ignored the proper steps under the law. She further explained that her April 27 apology, which the court saw as disrespectful, was not related to the case being heard. The apology, according to her, was a joke and was about a different matter involving a sexual harassment allegation—not the case in court.

Akpoti-Uduaghan also disagreed with the fine the judge placed on her. She said that the party that took her to court did not ask for a fine, and that the judge acted beyond her powers by giving a punishment that was not requested.

She is now asking the Court of Appeal to cancel the contempt ruling and clear her name in the case marked FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025.
