APC Wins Big in Lagos LG Polls, Despite Poor Turnout

Posted on July 13, 2025

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the July 12 local government elections held across Lagos State.

The polls, conducted by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), saw the ruling party winning the majority of chairmanship and councillorship seats.

The election was held peacefully in all 13,325 polling units spread across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state. However, reports from different locations indicated a low turnout of voters, despite the calm atmosphere.

A total of 57 Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship seats and 376 Councillorship positions were contested. Out of 19 registered political parties, 15 fielded candidates, with the APC contesting in all the available positions. The PDP and Labour Party also fielded candidates in many wards, while other parties had limited participation.

In Lagos Island LGA, APC’s Taiwo Oyekan was declared winner of the chairmanship race with 28,385 votes, defeating PDP’s Ajibade Olusegun, who scored 1,271 votes. Other parties trailed far behind in the contest.

Similarly, in Amuwo-Odofin LGA, APC’s Prince Lanre Sanusi secured a wide-margin victory with 24,926 votes, beating LP’s Seyi Ipinlaye, who got 1,962 votes. In Agege LGA, APC’s Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” won with 31,503 votes, while his closest rivals from APM and ZLP scored 86 and 10 votes respectively.

Reacting to the outcome, APC chairmanship candidate for Yaba LCDA, Adebayo Adefuye, described the election as smooth and credible. He used the opportunity to unveil his vision titled “Yaba tuntun,” meaning “New Yaba,” and praised ongoing efforts toward local government financial independence.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed appreciation to residents for their peaceful conduct during the polls. In a statement, he thanked voters for performing their civic duties and encouraged all political players to remain calm as LASIEC continues to release more results.

The governor also commended security agencies, electoral officials, and the media for their professionalism and support. With more results expected in the coming days, the APC appears set to retain firm control over the grassroots political structure of Lagos State.
