Emir of Kano, Sanusi Issues Stern Warning to Former Accountant General of the Federation

Posted on July 25, 2025

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has issued a strong warning to the former Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmad Idris, following growing public concern over the escape of a large python from his private residence in Daneji, a densely populated area in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

The monarch’s caution came after worried residents lodged complaints about the dangerous reptile, which allegedly went missing from the premises of the former AGF on Sunday. Emir Sanusi made it clear that Idris would be held accountable if any resident is harmed as a result of the escaped python or other wild animals reportedly kept in his home.

“This matter is not to be taken lightly. People’s lives are at stake,” the Emir warned, stressing the need for immediate action.

Panic has since gripped the Daneji community as the python remains unaccounted for several days after its escape. Residents are said to be living in fear, with many avoiding outdoor activities, especially for their children.

One resident, Nurulhaq Kabir Muhammad, noted that the situation has created serious anxiety among locals, stating that all other animals in Idris’ residence were evacuated earlier this week. Another, Rabi’u Isma’il, described the incident as terrifying, revealing that people are struggling to sleep at night due to fears that the reptile could be hiding nearby. Aisha Lawal, a mother of three, appealed to authorities to intervene quickly, warning that the situation could turn tragic if left unchecked.

In response, the Kano State Police Command has opened an investigation into why such dangerous animals were being housed in a residential neighborhood. Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed that Idris was summoned for questioning regarding the keeping of wild pets such as crocodiles and pythons in a populated area. According to the commissioner, Idris has agreed to hand over the animals to the Kano Zoological Garden, though investigations are still ongoing to confirm whether the python has harmed anyone or if all animals have indeed been accounted for.

The police have also deployed an intelligence team to the state zoological authorities to verify compliance and ensure that public safety is not further compromised.

Ahmad Idris, who previously served as Accountant General under the Buhari administration, is also facing corruption charges involving the alleged embezzlement of over ₦109 billion—a case that has kept him in the national spotlight.

The python incident has reignited public debate over private ownership of wild animals in urban areas, with residents now demanding stricter regulations and quicker intervention by the authorities to avert potential danger.
