INEC Finalises Preparations for Saturday’s Bye-Elections in 16 Constituencies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has completed all arrangements for Saturday’s bye-elections holding in 16 constituencies across 12 states.

In a statement on Thursday, INEC reminded political parties and candidates that campaigns must end by midnight, 14th August 2025, in line with the Electoral Act.

According to the commission, non-sensitive materials for the polls have already been delivered to the states. Sensitive materials are being distributed today. The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been configured, and recruitment and training of ad-hoc staff have been completed. Security and logistics arrangements are also in place.

The bye-elections will take place in two Senatorial Districts in Anambra and Edo States, five Federal Constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun and Oyo States, and nine State Constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba and Zamfara States. Some of these elections are due to the resignation or death of lawmakers, while others are court-ordered re-runs.

INEC appealed to political parties, candidates, voters, observers, and the media to follow the law, guidelines, and regulations during the polls. The commission also announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume nationwide on Monday, 18th August 2025, with online pre-registration. Physical registration will start on Monday, 25th August 2025, at 811 state and local government offices across the country.

For the FCT Area Council election scheduled for Saturday, 21st February 2026, INEC said 17 political parties have submitted nomination forms for 637 candidates contesting for 68 seats. The personal details of these candidates will be published on Monday, 18th August 2025, for public scrutiny before the final list is released on 22nd September 2025.
