Former President Goodluck Jonathan has shed light on his decision to depart Guinea Bissau on a plane
from Côte d’Ivoire rather than a Nigerian aircraft. In a recent statement, Jonathan expressed his gratitude to both President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, highlighting the efforts made by both leaders to facilitate his evacuation.
Jonathan explained that the decision was influenced by logistical and diplomatic considerations. “Côte d’Ivoire is closer to Guinea Bissau, and there’s a relationship between Francophone and Lusophone countries, which enabled Côte d’Ivoire to get a landing permit before Nigeria could,” he said. This strategic partnership and geographical proximity allowed the Ivorian aircraft to arrive promptly, making it the more practical choice for his evacuation.
Given the circumstances, Jonathan revealed that he advised the Nigerian government not to send their aircraft, as the Ivorian plane had already arrived and was ready to take him to safety. “So we asked the Nigerian government not to bother since the Ivorian aircraft had already arrived,” he clarified. This decision underscores Jonathan’s pragmatic approach to ensuring his safe and efficient departure from Guinea Bissau.
