Why We Are Not Praying For an African Pope – Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama

Posted on April 24, 2025

The recent passing of Pope Francis has sparked discussions and speculations about the election of his successor. Amidst the calls for an African pope, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, has offered a nuanced perspective on the matter.

Focus on Holiness, Not Geography

In a statement that has resonated with many, Archbishop Kaigama emphasized that the focus should not be on the geographical origin of the next pope but rather on their holiness and ability to lead the Catholic Church. “We are not praying for an African pope. We are praying for a good and Holy Pope who will shepherd the people,” he said.

God’s Will, Not Human Preference

The archbishop’s comments highlight the importance of trusting in God’s will during the papal election process. “We will get a new Pope according to God’s will. You may not like him, and you don’t have to, as long as he upholds the traditions and teachings of the church guided by sacred Tradition and the scripture,” Archbishop Kaigama noted.

Election of the Pope: A Spiritual Process

The papal election, also known as a conclave, is a spiritual process where cardinals from around the world gather to elect the next leader of the Catholic Church. The process is guided by tradition and prayer, with the cardinals seeking God’s guidance in their decision-making.

Key Qualities for the Next Pope

As the Catholic Church prepares to elect its next leader, many are reflecting on the qualities that would be essential for the role. Some of the key qualities include:

  • Spiritual leadership: The ability to provide spiritual guidance and direction to the global Catholic community.
  • Pastoral care: A deep commitment to caring for the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable.
  • Doctrinal integrity: The ability to uphold and defend the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Diplomatic skills: The ability to navigate complex international relationships and promote dialogue and understanding.

As the Catholic Church embarks on this new chapter, Archbishop Kaigama’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of prayer and discernment. The next pope will be chosen according to God’s will, and it is up to the faithful to support and pray for the new leader.
