Barrister Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has alleged that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has agreed to run as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, Bwala claimed Obi is already in talks with opposition leaders to form a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu, adding that the former governor has accepted the vice-presidential offer. The comments have stirred reactions, especially among Obi’s loyal supporters.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, emerged as one of the major contenders in the 2023 presidential election, contesting alongside Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar. Representing the Labour Party, Obi finished third in the polls but gained widespread support, especially among young Nigerians and urban voters. His campaign, which centered on transparency, accountability, and good governance, gave rise to the political movement known as the “Obidients.”
Bwala, who was previously a close associate of Atiku Abubakar before joining Tinubu’s camp, alleged that Obi is quietly negotiating to be part of a political alliance for 2027. According to him, discussions have been ongoing between Obi and other opposition figures, particularly about him becoming a running mate on a joint ticket. He claimed that despite publicly condemning political crossovers, Obi is engaging in the same practice behind closed doors.
“When people change party, Peter Obi abuses them,” Bwala said in the interview. “He is currently discussing how to become vice-presidential candidate. The Obidients said the only reason they are supporting him is so that Peter Obi would be the president of Nigeria. Anything short of that, they are not going to agree. He has been having meetings to become the vice-presidential candidate. He has accepted it.”
His statement has since sparked intense debate, with many Nigerians doubting the claim and questioning Bwala’s credibility.
