Labour Party: We Made a Mistake Calling our Youth Wing ‘Obedient’ – National Deputy Chairman

Posted on July 4, 2025

In a significant development within the Labour Party, Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi announced the rebranding of the party’s internal structure, formerly known as the “Obidient” movement, to the “Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration.”

This decision comes in the wake of criticisms and reflections from party members and supporters regarding the identity and branding of the movement that played a pivotal role in the party’s visibility during the 2023 general elections.

Dr. Olorunfemi’s statement emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes, suggesting that the rebranding is a strategic move to align the party’s identity with its broader goals of mobilization and integration. “We have learnt from that mistake and have promptly changed the name to the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration,” he stated. His comments underline the Labour Party’s commitment to evolving and adapting to the political landscape in Nigeria.

The term “Obidient” originated from the supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. The movement gained traction as a grassroots campaign, rallying young voters and those disillusioned with the traditional political parties. The term itself became a symbol of hope and change, representing a collective desire for a new political narrative in Nigeria.

Supporters of the movement have been vocal about their role in elevating the Labour Party’s status in the political arena. Many have expressed their sentiments through social media platforms, asserting, “We called ourselves ‘Obidient,’ not you. We made Labour Party popular, not you.” This rallying cry reflects a sense of ownership and pride among the supporters who mobilized under the “Obidient” banner during the election period.

Peter Obi’s campaign was characterized by a focus on issues such as education, healthcare, and economic reform, resonating particularly with the youth demographic. The Obidient movement leveraged social media effectively, creating a vibrant online community that engaged supporters and disseminated campaign messages. This grassroots approach marked a departure from conventional political strategies, emphasizing transparency and accountability.

The 2023 general elections were pivotal for the Labour Party, as it witnessed a surge in support, particularly among first-time voters. The party’s ability to galvanize young people and present a viable alternative to the established political parties was a significant factor in its performance during the elections. However, the party faced challenges, including accusations of internal discord and difficulties in maintaining the momentum generated by the Obidient movement post-elections.

As the Labour Party navigates its future, the decision to rebrand the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration reflects a desire to build on the successes of the past while addressing the concerns of its supporters. The party aims to create a more inclusive platform that fosters unity and collaboration among its members, ensuring that the voices of the grassroots are heard and represented.

In conclusion, the evolution of the Labour Party’s identity, marked by the transformation from the “Obidient” movement to the “Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration,” signifies a crucial moment in Nigerian politics. As the party seeks to redefine itself and build on the enthusiasm generated during the 2023 elections, it remains to be seen how effectively it can harness the energy of its supporters while addressing the challenges that lie ahead. The legacy of the Obidient movement, however, will undoubtedly continue to influence the political landscape in Nigeria for years to come.
