In a stunning turn of events, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has rejected a motion to ban the consumption and sale of dog meat in the state.
The motion, presented by Hon. Uduak Ekpoufot, failed to gain traction as it didn’t receive a single seconder, leaving animal lovers and health-conscious citizens disappointed.
Hon. Ekpoufot had made a passionate plea, highlighting the cruel methods used to slaughter dogs, the unhygienic conditions surrounding the trade, and the serious public health risks associated with consuming dog meat. He cited the dangers of rabies, salmonella, and other pathogens, emphasizing that several countries have banned the practice.
Despite the compelling arguments, the motion met a deaf ear, and the Speaker declared it rejected due to lack of support. This means that, for now, dog meat will continue to be on the menu in Akwa Ibom State.
The rejection has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and health-conscious individuals, who argue that the decision prioritizes cultural practices over human and animal welfare. What do you think? Should Akwa Ibom State reconsider its stance on dog-meat consumption?
