“I have no reason to remain in a sinking ship”says Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, who has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) today after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, 2025.
Diri cited the need to protect Bayelsa’s interests as the reason for his defection, stating that some individuals might not understand his decision now, but it would become clear in time, saying “I have no reason to remain in a sinking ship”.
The event, held in Yenagoa, the state capital, attracted thousands of supporters from all eight local government areas. Prominent figures in attendance included the Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima who represents the President, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, National and State Chairmen of APC, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, amongst others.
Diri’s decision to join the APC is seen as a significant political realignment in the South-South region. The APC has been working to expand its base in the oil-rich zone, which has traditionally been dominated by the PDP.
Governor Diri emphasized that his administration would continue to prioritize unity and development in the state. He also highlighted the progress made during his tenure, including the completion of uncompleted projects and the introduction of new ones.
The defection ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who described Diri as a “unifier”. Lokpobiri also praised the governor’s decision, stating that Bayelsa could no longer afford to be in opposition when key developmental decisions are being made at the national level.
