Nigerian comedian Efe Warriboy has reacted angrily to the decision of Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to declare a public holiday on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
The holiday was meant to honour President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the state, but it came just days after over 200 people were brutally killed in a violent attack. Efe questioned the morality of celebrating during a period of national mourning and accused the governor of insensitivity.
The deadly attack occurred in Yelewata, a community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where armed assailants slaughtered more than 200 residents. The violence sent shockwaves across the country, prompting widespread calls for justice and improved security from many influencers, celebrities and government officials including the President. Governor Alia announced a public holiday to welcome President Tinubu, who is expected to visit the state on order to negotiate and find solution to the insecurities in the state.
Efe Warriboy, known for his bold commentary, did not hold back in his criticism of the governor. In a viral video, he said, “A man lost 20 family members. And the governor’s priority is a public holiday to welcome the president? Tinubu should sneak in quietly, not come for a parade.” His statement struck a chord with many Nigerians who felt the decision was a display of misplaced priorities.
The comedian went further to accuse Governor Alia of using Tinubu’s visit as a political opportunity rather than showing empathy. He said, “Is Tinubu coming to commission roads or dead bodies? Even if you people signed a deal with foreigners to reduce Nigeria’s population, must you rub it in?” Efe’s comments suggested the governor was more interested in optics than in honouring the lives lost.
He also spoke about the governor’s background as a clergyman, claiming that political power had changed him for the worse. “Whether you’re a Reverend Father or Senior Pastor, once you get power in Nigeria, a demon enters you. And when you join APC, it gets worse,” he declared. His words resonated with many online, fuelling conversations about the disconnect between political leaders and the realities of the people they govern.
