Datti Baba-Ahmed Reveal Aspirants He Is Ready to Deputize in 2027

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and former running mate to Peter Obi, has disclosed that he is open to serving as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, August 22, 2025, Baba-Ahmed revealed that he has two individuals in mind whom he is willing to support as their deputy in the forthcoming elections. He, however, stated that one of the individuals has yet to make any public declaration about contesting, while the second is Peter Obi, his former principal and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.

“I am in the Labour Party. I am a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election,” Baba-Ahmed said, emphasizing his loyalty to the former Anambra State governor. “Until he decides otherwise, I am with him.”

Baba-Ahmed used the opportunity to criticize the recently formed opposition coalition that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a “deceptive move” incapable of rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges. According to him, many of the politicians aligning under the ADC banner are the same individuals who contributed to the nation’s problems.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has openly declared his interest in the 2027 presidential race and has been engaging with several political stakeholders, including members of the ADC coalition. This move has sparked speculation about a possible shift in his political base ahead of the election.

Baba-Ahmed, however, maintains that the Labour Party remains the best platform for real change and insists that he is committed to seeing Obi return to lead the party into the next presidential election. He also confirmed his readiness to align with any political group that shares his vision for a better Nigeria, provided its motives are genuine.

The former vice-presidential candidate has recently played a key role in efforts to reconcile warring factions within the Labour Party, a step many see as crucial to strengthening the party ahead of 2027.
