David Mark, the interim national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called attention to the pressing issues facing Northern Nigeria, asserting that his party is uniquely positioned to tackle these challenges if given the opportunity to govern.
Speaking at the 3rd expanded meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North) held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Mark emphasized the urgent need for cohesive action to heal the region, which he described as “bleeding.”
In his keynote address themed “Unity and Social Cohesion as a Panacea to the Challenges Facing Northern Nigeria,” Mark outlined the deep-rooted problems afflicting the North, including insecurity, poverty, ethnic and religious tensions, political fragmentation, and economic stagnation. He stated, “These issues did not arise overnight, nor will they vanish without concerted, deliberate efforts. We must recognize that we have contributed to our own plight and move away from the blame game to seek genuine solutions.”
Mark highlighted the detrimental effects of division and inaction on the region’s progress, urging a return to the principles of justice, equity, mutual respect, and shared purpose that once made Northern Nigeria a model of hope and development. He declared, “The time for lamentation is over. The North is suffering, and we are the only ones who can bring about healing. We must reject hate speech and divisive politics while investing in unifying initiatives—such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.”
He further stressed the importance of accountability and collaboration among the region’s people, encouraging them to restore their bonds of brotherhood. Mark pointed out that the past decade has seen rampant banditry, terrorism, and communal clashes, leading to the displacement of millions and a crippling of the local economy.
Despite the North’s abundant resources, Mark lamented that it remains the poorest region in Nigeria, with troubling levels of illiteracy, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure. He concluded by expressing confidence that, through unity and collective effort, the region can transform into a hub of peace, social cohesion, and economic advancement.
Recall that the leader of the NNPP , His Excellency Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso had last week criticized the Federal Government, accusing the government of concentrating resources in the development of the Southern part of Nigeria, a critique that the Federal Government has replied and takes serious reservations of.
