Dele Momodu Blasts PDP’s Zoning Policy

Former presidential aspirant and veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, has strongly criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

Momodu, who recently left the PDP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, described the move as a betrayal of democratic values and an act of political recklessness.

On Monday, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) officially announced that its 2027 presidential candidate would emerge from the southern region, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions within the opposition party.

Momodu Accuses Wike of Working for Tinubu

In a statement shared on Instagram, Momodu accused the PDP leadership of playing into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that the decision was orchestrated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to him, Wike has consistently undermined the PDP from within while openly aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The PDP finally succumbed to the cheap and puerile blackmail of the black sheep in the opposition party who are openly and daringly working for the ruling party,” Momodu wrote.

He further alleged that the PDP’s decision was a disguise, suggesting that the party’s structures are already being positioned to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“The Most Reckless Decision in Our Democracy”

Momodu described the zoning arrangement as “the most reckless decision in the history of our nascent democracy,” claiming that PDP governors have been reduced to political spectators under Wike’s influence.

He referenced the crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Sim Fubara has battled political instability, arguing that PDP leaders failed to protect one of their own.

The Ovation International publisher also accused Wike of hypocrisy, recalling that the former Rivers governor opposed zoning in 2022 when he sought to run alongside a northern presidential candidate, but is now pushing for a southern ticket in 2027.

PDP’s Alleged Secret Agenda

Momodu claimed that PDP’s southern zoning narrative is a cover-up, insisting that the party will not field a genuine challenger against Tinubu in the next election.

“The geniuses should be courageous enough to admit that Tinubu will be the joint candidate of APC and PDP in 2027. No Jupiter will stop Wike from using PDP structures for Tinubu,” he declared.

He dismissed ongoing speculations about possible PDP candidacies for Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, or Seyi Makinde, calling them “blatant lies from the pit of hell.”

What This Means for 2027

Political analysts believe Momodu’s outburst reflects the deepening cracks within the PDP, as the party struggles to redefine itself ahead of the next general elections. While zoning has historically been a balancing tool in Nigerian politics, critics argue that the PDP risks losing credibility if it is seen as an appendage of the ruling APC.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, the PDP’s decision to zone its ticket to the South may either consolidate its influence or fuel further division within its ranks.

For now, Dele Momodu’s fiery remarks keep the spotlight firmly on the opposition’s internal battles and raise questions about its readiness to challenge the APC in the next election.
