In a historic political shift in South South Nigeria, Vice President Kashim Shettima has described the recent mass defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State as a “political tsunami.” This unprecedented movement marks a significant moment in the region’s political landscape.
During a reception for Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwor along with numerous political associates, Shettima emphasized the magnitude of this shift, stating, “Never in the history of the South South region have we witnessed such a substantial defection to the APC. This movement signifies a new era for our party and the people of Delta State.”
Governor Sherrif, addressing the gathering, referred to the event not merely as a defection but as a movement fueled by recognition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for the state. “What we are witnessing here today is not just a change in party affiliation; it is a movement towards progress and unity,” Sherrif declared. “We appreciate the commitment shown by President Tinubu, and this is our way of reciprocating that trust.”
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was the Vice Presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, expressed his views on the political transition. “This decision to change our political platform was made in the best interest of Delta State,” Okowa stated. “We believe this is a strategic move that will benefit our people and promote development.”
The gathering, filled with enthusiasm and hope for the future, marks a pivotal moment in Delta State politics, reflecting a broader trend of changing allegiances within Nigeria’s political arena.
