Popular Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James has called out a Senegalese designer, accusing them of copying one of her most talked-about creations.
In a strongly worded post on social media, Veekee shared photos of the original dress she made for South African star Bonang Matheba, alongside images of the alleged copy. She ended her caption with one powerful word: “Thief!”
Veekee James is known for her eye-catching and elegant designs that often go viral. She has styled many celebrities and is loved for her unique touch. The designer at the center of this controversy is King Corset, a Senegalese brand that also creates high-end fashion pieces. According to Veekee, King Corset reproduced her exact design without permission or credit.
The dress in question is the stunning blue, green, and gold gown worn by Bonang Matheba during the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant. The gown features an off-shoulder mermaid silhouette, detailed beading, and a dramatic train. It quickly gained attention across social media, with many praising the creativity and craftsmanship behind it. Veekee shared that the dress was made in a very short time, with her team working round the clock to bring it to life.
However, weeks after its viral success, a similar dress appeared online, posted by King Corset. Veekee was shocked to see the same design, color, and even styling details copied. She called out the designer on Instagram, stating that while inspiration is normal in fashion, copying another creator’s work completely and failing to credit them is unacceptable. Many fans and fellow designers supported her, calling for more respect for original work in the fashion industry.
This incident has raised a conversation online about the need for originality, ethics, and intellectual property in fashion. While it is common for styles to influence others, many believe there should be a clear line between inspiration and imitation.
