Governor says he’s attending wedding, not vacationing; asks APC to celebrate with Adeleke family
Osogbo, Nigeria – August 6, 2025 – Amidst rising political speculation and rumours of defection, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has publicly invited members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join him in celebrating the wedding of Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke (Davido), in the United States.
The unusual gesture follows a statement from the Osun APC questioning the governor’s whereabouts. Responding through his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke confirmed that he left Nigeria a few days ago aboard the family’s private jet to attend the wedding of his globally celebrated nephew.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States via the family private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” the statement said.
“His Excellency is extending an invitation to the opposition party to attend the event and share in the joy of the occasion with the Adeleke family. Those unable to attend may join virtually.”
A Subtle Political Move?
The invitation, though couched in goodwill, is seen by some observers as a subtle political statement amid growing rumours that Governor Adeleke is considering a defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC — a move that has sparked intense political conversations in Osun State and beyond.
Political analysts note that the invitation may be an attempt to disarm critics and project political maturity, particularly in an era of deep partisan divisions.
“Not a Vacation” – Adeleke Defends US Trip
Addressing concerns over governance during his absence, the governor’s office clarified that the trip is not an official vacation, and that Governor Adeleke remains in constant communication with his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who is overseeing the state’s administrative duties.
“Since taking office in November 2022, the Governor has not embarked on any official vacation,” Rasheed said.
“Even on this trip, he has kept it short to ensure that crucial state functions are not neglected.”
APC Yet to Respond to the Invitation
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun APC is yet to issue a formal response to the governor’s invitation. However, sources within the party describe the gesture as “unexpected” and are reportedly weighing the political undertones behind the move.
Davido, known for his close relationship with his uncle and strong public support for the PDP during the 2022 Osun governorship election, is currently preparing for what has been dubbed “the celebrity wedding of the year” in the U.S.
