Imo State Government Bans Nursery, JSS 3 Graduation Parties

The Imo State Government has stopped graduation ceremonies and parties for Nursery and Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) students. The new policy is aimed at reducing unnecessary spending by parents and guardians.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikegwuoha, announced the directive in a memo dated August 15, 2025. He explained that only Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School (SSS 3) students are allowed to hold graduation ceremonies in line with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.

According to him, the move became necessary because graduation parties for nursery and JSS 3 students place a heavy financial burden on families. He noted that schools should rather focus on academic achievement at the end of major school cycles.

The commissioner stressed that the Ministry of Education is committed to providing quality learning for all students. He said that from now on, all schools must obey the new policy across the state.

In addition, the government directed schools to stop the yearly change of textbooks. The new rule says that approved textbooks must be used for at least four years before any change can be made.

Ikegwuoha explained that this will help parents save money, allow siblings to reuse books, and promote consistency in teaching. He added that both private and faith-based schools must follow the official list of approved books.

The new policy takes immediate effect in all public and private schools in Imo State. Parents and school owners have been urged to comply fully with the directive.
