28 year old Liverpool football star, Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain, just 11 days after marrying his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. His younger brother, André Jota, who also played football for Penafiel, died in the crash as well.
The accident happened on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, on the A-52 highway in Zamora province, near the region of Sanabria. According to reports, the car they were traveling in went off the road and caught fire. Witnesses called emergency services after seeing the car in flames. The fire also spread to the nearby bushes.
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton for €44.7 million. Since then, he played 182 matches for the club, scored 65 goals, and made 26 assists. During his time at Liverpool, he won three major trophies: the Premier League in the 2024–25 season, the FA Cup in 2021–22, and the League Cup in 2021–22.
Before joining Liverpool, Jota played for clubs like Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton. Although Atlético signed him in 2016, he didn’t play any official matches for them and was instead loaned out to Porto and then Wolves, where he later signed permanently.
