Winners Chapel at 44: Celebrating a Legacy of Faith, Growth, and Global Influence

Posted on May 2, 2025

Living Faith Church – Today marks 44 years since the founding of one of the world’s most influential Christian ministries — .

Rooted in a divine vision and built on unwavering faith, this church has grown from a modest beginning into a global Christian powerhouse with millions of followers across continents.

The Vision That Sparked a Movement

The journey of Winners Chapel began on May 2, 1981, when Bishop David Oyedepo, then just 26 years old, experienced a profound encounter with God. During an 18-hour spiritual visitation, he received a mandate that would lay the foundation for an international mission:

“The hour has come to liberate the world from all oppressions of the devil through the preaching of the Word of Faith. I am sending you to undertake this task.”

That divine instruction became the heartbeat of the Living Faith Church, which officially began operations on December 11, 1983, with only four members.

From Humble Roots to a Global Movement

From its first meetings in Kaduna, Nigeria, the ministry relocated its headquarters to Lagos in 1989, a move that catalyzed rapid growth. By the mid-90s, the church was experiencing massive revivals that grew attendance from 3,500 to over 50,000 within just five years.

In 1998, the church acquired a vast expanse of land in Ota, Ogun State — now known as Canaanland. A year later, in 1999, the Faith Tabernacle, a 50,000-seat auditorium, was completed in record time. At its dedication, it was recognized as the world’s largest church building by capacity.

Expanding the Borders of Impact

Today, Living Faith Church has expanded its reach beyond Nigeria to over 150 nations, with thousands of branches spread across Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Key milestones in the ministry’s growth include:

  • 1994: Launch into 41 African countries

  • 1996: Acquisition of its first mission aircraft

  • 1999: Inauguration of the annual global conference, Shiloh

  • 2000: Global missions launched across multiple continents

  • 2002: Establishment of Covenant University

  • 2011: Opening of Landmark University

Annual Shiloh Convocation: A Spiritual Gathering of Nations

Every December, the church hosts Shiloh, a prophetic convocation attended by millions in person and online. With satellite broadcast capabilities and global viewing centers, Shiloh is a time of spiritual renewal, teaching, and divine encounters for believers worldwide.

Equipping the Future: Education and Leadership Development

In line with its commitment to holistic transformation, Living Faith Church has invested heavily in education. Its two flagship universities — Covenant University and Landmark University — are recognized for their academic excellence and Christian values. These institutions focus on raising visionary leaders and empowering youth for societal impact.

The Foundation of the Faith: 12 Spiritual Pillars

At the core of the church’s teachings are 12 foundational truths, known as the 12 Pillars of the Commission. These include:

  • Faith

  • The Word

  • The Supernatural

  • The Holy Spirit

  • Prosperity

  • Prayer

  • Healing

  • Wisdom

  • Success

  • Vision

  • Consecration

  • Praise

These principles are the spiritual anchors that guide the church’s mission and message.

Celebrating 44 Years of Transformation

This year’s anniversary celebrations span three days of special events, each reflecting on God’s faithfulness:

  • April 30 – Praise Night (6PM–8PM)

  • May 1 – Testimony Night (6PM–8PM)

  • May 2 – Liberation Night Vigil (10PM–5AM), the grand finale and prophetic gathering

As the church commemorates 44 years of impactful ministry, it continues to point the world to Jesus Christ — the true source of liberty and transformation.

A Church of Global Significance

From its prophetic roots to its global expansion, the story of Winners Chapel is a testament to obedience, vision, and divine direction. What started as a small fellowship is now a thriving, multi-national mission shaping lives, building institutions, and changing communities.

As the world celebrates this remarkable journey, one scripture sums it up perfectly:

Psalm 118:23 (KJV)
“This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.”

Happy 44th Anniversary, Winners Chapel!

To God alone be all the glory for 44 years of liberation, transformation, and faith in action.
