In a recent interview with prominent broadcaster Rufai Oseni on Arise TV, the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, shared his insights regarding the state of the government house building project left behind by his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.
Otti’s remarks shed light on his administration’s approach to governance and development in the state.
Upon taking office on May 23, 2025, Otti was greeted by what he initially perceived as a magnificent government house. The ground floor of the building was impressively completed and adorned with exquisite Italian furniture, showcasing a level of sophistication and elegance. However, as he ascended the staircase to the upper levels, Otti’s admiration quickly turned to dismay. He discovered that the upper floors were in a state of disrepair, lacking even basic finishes such as plastering, painting, and furnishings. This stark contrast left him taken aback and prompted questions about the management of state resources by his predecessor.
When asked about the possibility of probing Dr. Ikpeazu for commissioning an incomplete project, Governor Otti expressed a pragmatic approach to governance. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the needs of the people rather than getting entangled in distractions. “I have just four years,” he stated, “and if you begin to distract yourself with probes, you will finish your four years without any achievements. I have too much to do for my people, so for now, I have no time to probe anyone to avoid distractions.” His response reflects a commitment to prioritizing the immediate needs of the state and ensuring that his administration remains productive and focused on development.
In addition to addressing the unfinished government house, Otti also discussed how he has been able to undertake numerous developmental projects without resorting to bank loans. He attributed his administration’s success to a combination of prudence, strict adherence to priorities, and improved internally generated revenue (IGR). “These are the secrets of my performance,” he explained. By being prudent with resources, prioritizing essential projects, and enhancing the state’s revenue generation capabilities, Otti believes he can effectively address the challenges facing Abia State and deliver meaningful progress during his tenure.
Governor Otti’s approach underscores a forward-thinking mindset, as he seeks to build a legacy of development while avoiding the pitfalls of political distractions. His focus on constructive governance and fiscal responsibility aims to foster growth and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Abia State. As the governor embarks on this journey, his commitment to transparency and accountability remains evident, even as he chooses to prioritize action over inquiry into past administrations.
