Nigeria Declares Public Holiday to Honour Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Posted on July 14, 2025

In alignment with the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has announced Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following President Tinubu’s approval. In a statement signed by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister emphasized that the holiday serves as a tribute to Buhari’s service to the nation, his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his lasting legacy in governance and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari dedicated his life to serving Nigeria with integrity and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

The Minister encouraged citizens to honor the late President’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, aligning with Buhari’s vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.

Additionally, as previously announced, national flags will fly at half-mast during the seven-day mourning period, commencing Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The Federal Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
