The UK government has announced a significant change in its immigration policy, reducing the post-study stay period for international students.

From two years to 18 months, effective January 1, 2027. This change will impact international students who apply for a Graduate visa on or after the specified date.

According to the new rules, students with a PhD or doctoral qualification will still be eligible for a three-year Graduate visa. However, most international students will now have a shorter period to find employment or switch to a different visa category.

The UK government aims to streamline the immigration process and ensure international students contribute to the workforce in a more targeted manner. This move is part of a broader effort to reform the immigration system, including stricter English language requirements and increased financial requirements for student visas.

The change has sparked debate, with some arguing it may deter international students from choosing the UK as a study destination. Others believe it will encourage students to secure employment quickly and contribute to the UK economy.

International students planning to study in the UK should be aware of the new rules and plan accordingly. Those who apply for a Graduate visa before December 31, 2026, will still be eligible for the two-year stay period.
