Nigerians Call for GTBank Boycott After VDM’s Arrest

Posted on May 2, 2025
Guarantee Trust Bank- A wave of outrage has swept across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing their dissatisfaction with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) following the arrest of social media personality Very Dark Man (VDM) at a bank branch in Abuja. The arrest, carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for a boycott of the bank.

The Incident

VDM was reportedly arrested at the GTBank branch after visiting the bank with his mother to lodge a complaint about deductions from her account. According to eyewitnesses, VDM was locked in a security door for over 5 minutes before the EFCC operatives arrived and took him into custody. The circumstances surrounding the arrest have raised concerns, with many questioning the bank’s role in the incident.

Public Outcry

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their outrage, with hundreds of tweets calling for a total boycott of GTBank. The hashtag #BoycottGTBank is trending, with many users urging customers and businesses to close their accounts and refuse transactions with anyone who provides a GTBank account as a receiving account.

Demands for Action

The public is demanding answers from GTBank regarding the circumstances surrounding VDM’s arrest. Many are questioning whether the bank’s actions were justified and whether they had a role to play in the EFCC’s decision to arrest VDM.

Confirmation of Arrest

VDM’s lawyer, Barr. Deji Adewaju, has confirmed that his client is in the custody of the EFCC. However, the exact reasons for the arrest remain unclear, with many speculating that it may be related to VDM’s complaint about the deductions from his mother’s account.

Conclusion

The incident has sparked a heated debate about the role of banks in law enforcement and the need for transparency in their dealings with customers. As the situation continues to unfold, many are watching to see how GTBank will respond to the public outcry and whether VDM will be released from custody.
