Apart from Nigerians suffering the negative impact of his alleged looting of billions from the treasury, of which he has been standing trial for, residents of Daneji, a densely populated area in the Kano Municipal Local Government Area, have also been thrown into panic following reports that a dangerous African rock python has escaped from the residence of former Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Alhaji Ahmad Idris.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday, has sparked growing fear across the neighborhood, as the massive reptile remains missing days after the escape.

Residents Gripped by Fear

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Arewa PUNCH confirmed that the python escaped from the premises of the embattled former AGF, who served under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

A resident, Nurulhaq Kabir Muhammad, said the situation has caused serious anxiety:

“Since the python escaped, everyone has been living in fear. All other animals in the house were evacuated on Tuesday.”

Another resident, Rabi’u Isma’il, described the development as “terrifying,” adding:

“We can’t sleep peacefully knowing that a giant snake is on the loose and hiding somewhere. Many of us have stopped allowing our children to play outside.”

Aisha Lawal, a mother of three, called on the authorities to act swiftly:

“This is not just about the snake – it’s about our safety. We need help before something tragic happens.”

Police Launch Investigation

In response to the situation, the Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the matter, focusing on why such dangerous animals were being kept in a residential area.

Speaking to reporters, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori confirmed that former AGF Ahmad Idris was invited for questioning regarding the maintenance of exotic and dangerous pets—including pythons and crocodiles—within the city center.

“It is true we have invited the former AGF with regards to keeping dangerous pets at his home, causing tension and panic among residents,” Bakori stated.

He added that the ex-official has agreed to surrender the animals to the Kano State Zoological Garden, but investigations are still ongoing to determine whether the escaped python has caused injury or any form of public harm.

The police also dispatched an intelligence unit to verify whether the animals have indeed been turned over to the authorities.

Emir of Kano Issues Stern Warning

In a rare intervention, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has issued a stern warning to Alhaji Idris, following complaints from residents of Daneji quarters.

The Emir cautioned that the former AGF would be held fully responsible should any resident suffer harm due to the escaped python or other dangerous pets allegedly kept in his residence.

“This matter is not to be taken lightly. People’s lives are at stake,” the Emir warned.

Background on the Former AGF

Alhaji Ahmad Idris previously made headlines over allegations of corruption involving over ₦109 billion. He was arrested and arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with legal proceedings still ongoing. Since leaving office, he has kept a relatively low profile—until now.

Public Demands Urgent Action

The python’s escape has caused widespread panic, with many residents demanding immediate intervention from state authorities and wildlife control agencies to prevent a potential tragedy.

As of the time of this report, the escaped python has not yet been found, and the community remains on high alert.
