PDP Governor’s Forum is a Pressure Group not Organ of the Party- Wike

Posted on April 18, 2025

In a Press briefing this morning, Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has openly expressed his views on the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.

His remarks have stirred considerable controversy and highlighted the internal divisions that have become increasingly apparent in recent months.

Wike categorically stated that the PDP Governors Forum should not be viewed as a governing body capable of determining the party’s leadership. “The Governors Forum is a pleasure group, not an organ of the party,” he declared, emphasizing that the role of the forum is not to dictate who leads the PDP. This assertion has raised eyebrows, especially considering Wike’s history of wielding significant influence over party affairs during his tenure as governor.

Reflecting on the past, Wike noted, “That was yesterday; the fact that it happened yesterday and no one questioned it does not mean that it must happen today. That was yesterday; this is today.” His comments suggest a shift in dynamics within the party, indicating that the traditional power structures may no longer hold the same sway. This perspective has led to further fragmentation within the PDP as various factions vie for control and influence.

Moreover, Wike’s involvement in numerous legal battles on behalf of the PDP has added layers of complexity to the party’s challenges. His frequent recourse to the courts to settle disputes has not only strained relationships within the party but has also diverted attention from essential electoral strategies. Critics argue that his actions are indicative of a broader struggle for power, which could be detrimental to the party’s unity and effectiveness as it prepares for the 2027 elections.

When pressed about the PDP’s readiness for the upcoming elections, Wike did not mince words, stating, “Based on the situation on the ground, the party is not ready for the election.” His candid acknowledgment of the party’s unpreparedness underscores the urgency for a cohesive strategy and governance structure, which currently appears to be lacking.

Wike’s comments and actions reflect a tumultuous period for the PDP, marked by internal strife and conflicting ambitions. As factions jockey for position, the party faces the daunting task of reconciling these differences to present a united front in the face of upcoming electoral challenges. The implications of Wike’s stance and the ongoing legal disputes are significant, as they threaten to further complicate the party’s ability to navigate the political landscape effectively.
