Political Shift: 8 House of Representatives Members from PDP, LP Change Party

Posted on May 6, 2025

In a significant political development, two members of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives, Mark Obetta and Denis Nnamdi, both from Enugu State, have officially defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmakers cited unresolved internal disputes and the presence of parallel leadership structures in their home state as the driving factors behind their decision to switch parties.

Their departure comes on the heels of another notable political shift, where Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa transitioned from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) just two weeks prior, underscoring the dynamic nature of the current political landscape in Nigeria.

In addition to the Labour Party defections, six members from the PDP have also made the move to the APC. These representatives from Delta State include Victor Nwokolo, Julius Pondi, Thomas Ereyitomi, Nicholas Mutu, Ukodhiko Jonathan, and Nnamdi Ezechi.

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, formally announced these defections to the chamber, marking a notable increase in party changes among lawmakers. With the recent shifts, the total number of defections during this plenary session has reached eight members, highlighting the ongoing realignment within Nigeria’s political parties.

As political dynamics continue to evolve, these changes reflect the shifting allegiances and strategies of lawmakers as they seek to navigate the complexities of governance and representation in the country.
