Kefas characterized the situation as a personal and humanitarian concern, stating, “This is not a political matter but a human one,” and encouraged residents to pray for Alkali’s swift recovery.

This marks the first public acknowledgment from Governor Kefas regarding the prolonged absence of Alkali, who has been inactive for several months due to illness. He addressed the public directly, not just as their governor but as a concerned fellow citizen guided by faith and moral values.

Reflecting on his military background, Kefas underscored the importance of unity and collective support, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences. He called on the community to rally behind Alkali, who fell ill while performing official duties.

Quoting scripture from both the Bible and the Qur’an, Kefas highlighted the importance of compassion and unity. He referenced Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens,” and Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:32), which conveys the message that saving a single life is akin to saving all of humanity.

While acknowledging the constitutional framework that governs such situations, Kefas emphasized that legal procedures must be underpinned by moral values. “Now, in his moment of need, it is our responsibility to support him. Let us lift him in prayer, assist his family, and demonstrate that in Taraba State, humanity takes precedence over politics,” he stated. He reassured the public of his commitment to act according to the constitution if necessary, indicating that compassion should guide their actions during this challenging time.

Legal Perspective on Governance and Compassion

In response to the governor’s remarks, Jalingo-based human rights lawyer Barrister Bilyaminu Maihanci stressed the importance of adhering to legal frameworks while exercising compassion. He cautioned that while empathy is essential, governance must function within the boundaries of the law.

“This situation is not about replacing the deputy governor out of spite; it’s about ensuring that the machinery of governance continues to operate legally,” Maihanci remarked. He warned that failing to address the absence of a functioning deputy could jeopardize the principles of constitutional democracy.

Maihanci urged Governor Kefas, the State Executive Council, and the House of Assembly to take immediate action in accordance with Sections 189 and 191 of the Constitution. “The conscience of leaders should align with constitutional mandates rather than replace them,” he concluded.

This ongoing dialogue reflects the delicate balance between compassion and governance, highlighting the critical need for adherence to legal protocols while fostering a supportive community in Taraba State.
