Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp has announced that it will cease support for certain iPhones and Android devices starting in May 2025.
As one of the world’s leading messaging applications, boasting around two billion monthly users—including a significant number in Nigeria—this move comes as Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, updates its compatibility requirements for operating systems.
The iPhone models affected by this change include those released in 2013 and 2014, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. In addition, Android devices that cannot be upgraded to version 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer will also lose access to the app. Some specific Android models on the list include Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini; Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014); HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601; LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90; and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia V.
In a statement, WhatsApp emphasized that these changes are part of ongoing updates aimed at ensuring the app remains secure and functional on newer devices. Users of the affected smartphones are encouraged to upgrade to supported models to continue using WhatsApp seamlessly.
