Popular Nigerian social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Verydarkman (VDM), has strongly criticized the Nigerian Police Force over their reaction to a viral video of actress Angela Okorie jogging with a police officer.
The incident, which happened a few days ago, led to disciplinary action against the officer involved.
The video, which quickly went viral online, showed Angela Okorie jogging outdoors while a police officer jogged behind her, appearing to act as her escort. In the same clip, other officers stood nearby, watching. While many people believed it was part of a movie scene, the police authorities saw it as misconduct and disciplined the officer involved, which sparked mixed reactions from the public.
In a series of posts, VDM described the punishment given to the officer as unfair. He questioned why the police were quick to act on Angela Okorie’s harmless jogging video, while ignoring more serious issues threatening national security.
VDM reminded the police PRO that during the same period the actress’s video was trending, there were other viral videos showing armed herdsmen in the company of police and military officers in the bush, alongside armored vehicles. He played one of the videos, where a herdsman claimed the guns did not come from cows but from politicians. VDM asked why the police were silent on that matter.
He told the police PRO, “Your hypocrisy is very alarming,” and challenged him to address the videos showing real security threats. VDM said that the focus of the police should be on protecting Nigerians, not on chasing clout with celebrities’ videos.
Speaking about Angela Okorie, VDM said he was disappointed she used a police officer for a video shoot. He suggested that she could have hired private security instead of involving the police, who are meant to serve the public and not individuals for movie roles.
He also blamed politicians for the misuse of police officers. According to him, many politicians treat security agents as personal assistants, sending them on errands and using them at parties instead of for official duties.
In his final remarks, VDM warned that the police may try to invite or even detain Angela Okorie for questioning. He dared them to go ahead if they truly believe she committed a crime, saying the public is watching how they handle the situation.
