Nigerian Government Reacts to Recent U.S. Visa Restriction Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reacted to the United States’ new visa rule, saying it is unfair and puts pressure on Nigerian travelers.

Earlier, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria announced a new visa policy on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The embassy stated that non-immigrant visas for Nigerians such as those for business, tourism, study, and exchange programs will now only be valid for three months and allow just one entry into the U.S. This means Nigerians will need to apply for a new visa each time they want to travel after three months.

In a statement released by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebenfa, the Nigerian government asked the U.S. to rethink its decision. He said the rule change affects common visa categories like B1/B2 (for business and tourism), F (for students), and J (for cultural exchange programs).

The government said this new rule is not fair, especially considering the friendly relationship and strong ties between Nigeria and the U.S. They believe both countries should treat each other with respect and fairness, especially in matters like visas.

According to the statement, this new policy will make life harder for many Nigerians. These include students looking to study in the U.S., businesspeople, families visiting loved ones, and others going for cultural or educational reasons.

Nigeria is asking the U.S. to change this decision and go back to a policy that shows true partnership and cooperation between both countries. At the same time, Nigeria respects the U.S.’s right to make its own immigration rules.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that talks are ongoing, and the Nigerian government is working on finding a fair solution that will benefit both countries.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has said the new rule only applies to visas issued after July 8, 2025. Any non-immigrant visas issued before that date will still be valid as originally stated.
