This change has been warmly received by many, with gratitude expressed towards Pastor W.F. Kumuyi and Mummy Esther Kumuyi for championing this progressive idea.
A member of the church who simply put his name as Daejumong, took to his social media handle and wrote “I am happy Deeper Life ladies are gradually modernising their dressing. Thanks to Pst Kumuyi and especially Mummy Esther Kumuyi for this laudable idea. Many young people have sadly and painfully left the church because of the harsh dressing formula especially for women”.
Historically, the church has held strict guidelines on dressing, particularly for women, which some congregants felt were too rigid. This led to a painful exodus of young people from the church, seeking a more contemporary worship environment. Referencing Ecclesiastes 9:8, which states, “Put on nice clothes and make yourself look good,” the church’s leadership seems to be aligning its practices more closely with the sentiments of its members. A notable incident that underscores the church’s evolving perspective occurred a few years ago when the son of the church’s founder married outside Nigeria. The wedding sparked controversy after the bride wore what was deemed a ‘worldly’ wedding gown, adorned with earrings and gold ornaments, elements that are typically frowned upon within the Nigerian branch of the church. Pastor Kumuyi faced criticism for officiating the wedding, especially as he has since relocated to America, where some congregants have adopted more liberal dressing styles.
